The Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) did not allocate a specific amount of money for tax credits. Instead, it provided a mechanism for eligible employers to receive tax credits to offset the costs of providing paid sick leave and expanded family and medical leave to employees affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The tax credits were designed to cover the qualified leave wages paid by the employer, as well as the allocable cost of maintaining health insurance coverage for the eligible employee during the leave period. The specific details and limitations of the tax credits were outlined in the FFCRA, and they were intended to help employers manage the financial impact of providing mandated leave benefits during the specified period of the pandemic.
The FFCRA's tax credit provisions were temporary and applied to qualified leave wages paid between April 1, 2020, and December 31, 2020. After this period, the FFCRA's provisions related to paid leave expired, and the tax credits were no longer available for new leave taken under the FFCRA.
